Salt in the koi pond – when, why, and how much? 🧂🤏🏻

Salt in the koi pond is a topic that constantly raises questions – but it can also be an extremely effective tool for the health of your koi. Used correctly, it supports stress reduction, protects against parasite problems, and helps in critical water quality situations. Don't worry – we've got you covered! 🌱🐟

In this article, you will learn:

• Why salt in the koi pond is useful 🛡️
• Which types of salt are suitable

• How to dose salt correctly and safely

• Which dosages are appropriate for which application
🐟
• What you absolutely need to pay attention to

Why use salt in a koi pond at all?

Salt can specifically support your koi – provided it is used consciously and in a controlled manner. 👀

Salt helps with, among other things:

• Stress reduction (e.g., after transfer or introduction to a new group)
• Parasites like Ichthyo, Apiosoma, and Trichodina
🦠
• Support with fungus and mucous membrane problems

• Minor algae control
🌿
• Protection during increased nitrite levels
🛡️

When used correctly, salt has a stabilizing effect on the osmoregulation of your koi and relieves stress on the immune system 🧬.

🧂 Which type of salt should it be? Please use only iodine-free salt or special pond salt.

🚨 Important:

• No iodized salt ❌
• No table salt with anti-caking agents or additives ❌

Correct dosage is crucial so that salt in the koi pond can have its positive effect without stressing the fish or the equipment. As a general rule: always add salt slowly. It is best to dump the salt in one pile in the pond. This way, the salt dissolves slowly and evenly. Never put the salt directly into filters, pumps, or skimmers, as this can damage filter bacteria and corrode technical components.

Equally important is careful handling of the amount. Excessively high salt concentrations can be toxic to koi and disrupt the biological balance in the pond. Therefore, you should measure the salinity regularly and prefer to dose cautiously rather than adding too much salt at once. 👀

⚠️ Please note that the specified dosages are recommendations only and must always be adapted to the specific situation on-site.

Furthermore, salt should only ever be used for a limited time. Salt treatments usually last from 14 days to a maximum of 4 weeks. Afterwards, the salinity is slowly lowered back to 0% through partial water changes to gently return the fish to normal conditions. 📆

Dosages for various applications

Long-term stress reduction & introduction to new group

• 0.5% salinity = 5 kg iodine-free salt per 1,000 liters
• Ideal when introducing new koi or during spawning stress
🐟

Salt can be used purposefully in a koi pond, but should always be used consciously and in moderation. For therapeutic use, the salinity is usually between 0.2% and 0.5%. This concentration can provide relief to koi during stress or certain illnesses and support their osmotic balance. Important: In case of serious illness, a veterinarian should always be consulted first, as many medications can lose their effectiveness or react unreliably at a salinity of 0.1% or higher. ⚖️

Salt is also occasionally used for algae control. A salinity of 0.15% to 0.2% can inhibit the growth of string algae. However, caution is advised here, because not only algae are sensitive – pond plants can also be damaged at this dosage. 🌿

As nitrite protection, salt is particularly helpful in critical situations. Even 0.05% to 0.1% can significantly reduce the uptake of nitrite through the gills and thus be life-saving until water parameters are stabilized. 🛡️

Conclusion: Salt – an all-rounder handled with responsibility 🐟
Salt is an effective aid in the koi pond when used correctly, consciously, and for a limited time. With iodine-free salt, slow dosage, and regular monitoring, you are on the safe side. 📌

⚠️ Note: Anything above 0.70% salinity can be dangerous for your koi.
