☀️ SUMMER: Oxygen in summer – why sufficient oxygen supply is vital now 💨🐟

In summer, oxygen becomes the most important resource in the pond – and at the same time the scarcest. The reason is pure physics: Warm water can hold significantly less oxygen than cool water. While water at around 20 °C can still absorb about 9 mg/l of oxygen, at 28–30 °C it is often only around 7.5 mg/l. Precisely when Koi are more active due to the heat and need more oxygen, less of it is available. This gap can quickly become dangerous on hot days. ⚠️🌡️

In this article, you will learn:

  • Why summer puts oxygen levels under pressure 🔥
  • Which values serve as a guideline 📊
  • How to recognize oxygen deficiency early on 👀
  • How to reliably ensure sufficient oxygen 💨
  • Which aerators are suitable for this 🛠️

🔥 Why summer is critical

Several factors come together simultaneously:

  • Warm water physically stores less dissolved oxygen
  • Higher temperatures accelerate the Koi's metabolism – their oxygen demand increases
  • Algae and bacteria consume a lot of oxygen, especially at night (during the day, plants/algae produce it; at night, they respire it)
  • High stocking density and heavy feeding further increase oxygen depletion
  • Even the filter biology consumes oxygen – the warmer and more active it is, the more oxygen it draws

➡️ The most dangerous time is often the early morning hours: Over the night, algae, bacteria, and fish have consumed oxygen without new oxygen being replenished through photosynthesis. Oxygen levels reach their lowest point here.

📊 Values for orientation

  • Above 6 mg/l → good, safe range for Koi
  • Below approx. 5 mg/l → onset of stress
  • Below approx. 4 mg/l → critical, acute danger

➡️ If you want to know exactly, measure the oxygen – ideally early in the morning, when the value is at its lowest.

👀 Take these warning signs seriously

  • Koi are gathered close to the water inlet or at the surface in the morning
  • Rapid, frantic breathing / "gasping" at the surface
  • Apathetic behavior, reduced appetite
  • Several Koi gathering at the most oxygen-rich area

➡️ Such signs are a clear indication: oxygen input is insufficient. Now is the time to act immediately, do not wait.

💨 How to ensure oxygen supply

  • Additional aeration via diaphragm/air pumps with air stones
  • Run aeration continuously – especially at night and early morning
  • Promote water movement at the surface: This is where gas exchange takes place
  • Also aerate the filter – the biology needs oxygen too, otherwise decomposition performance drops
  • On extreme days: reduce feeding (digestion consumes oxygen) and provide shade

➡️ Rule of thumb for a rough estimate: approx. 2 liters of air per minute per 1,000 liters of pond water. When in doubt, go for a larger size – there is practically no such thing as too much oxygen.

✅ Conclusion: In summer, oxygen supply determines the well-being and health of your Koi. Those who understand the relationships and ensure sufficient aeration in time – especially at night and early in the morning – will get their fish safely through the hottest days. ☀️💨🐟
