Get your pond ready for spring!

Tips for a healthy koi pond after winter

Spring is finally here, and that means your koi are slowly waking up from their winter dormancy. Now begins a particularly important time in the pond year. In this article, I will show you what to look out for in the spring so that your koi can start the season healthy, lively, and colorful.

Check the pond water level 💧

Take a look at the water level. Due to evaporation and rainwater drainage, the level can drop during the winter. Ensure that the water level is ideal again. A rule of thumb is that the water level should be about 10-15 cm below the edge of the pond. If you have a pond pump, it can also be useful to monitor the water level regularly so that it does not run dry.

Clean the pond filter and pump 🔧

In winter, the filter is often used less or even turned off. Now is the ideal time to clean the filter thoroughly. Remove any deposits, algae, and dirt that may have accumulated in the filter and pump. If you have a UVC lamp in the filter, check this as well; especially in spring, UVC technology is increasingly needed to keep the water clear. Additionally, you can promote the balance in the pond with biological water conditioners. 💡

Test water quality 🧪

Spring is the perfect time to take a close look at water quality. Test the pH value, hardness, and ammonia and nitrite levels. Especially after the winter break, the water chemistry can change. A stable pH value and low ammonia levels are important for your koi to be well. Should problems arise, you can help with special agents that adjust the pH value or break down pollutants.

Wake pond plants from winter hibernation 🌷

Pond plants are not just nice to look at; they also contribute to water quality. Some plants survive the winter in the pond, while others now need to be put back in their place. Check the plants for dead leaves and cut them off. If you have plants like water lilies, check if they have enough space to grow vigorously in the spring.

Spring also means: Algae season 🌱

With the sunlight comes an old acquaintance: algae. Filamentous algae in particular like to spread quickly in the spring. The reason for this is the oversupply of nutrients in the water paired with plenty of light. To avoid this, you should act in good time. Pay attention to good water balance, ensure sufficient oxygen, and use proven algae treatments if necessary. UV clarifiers can also help you keep suspended algae in check and the water clear.

Gradually acclimate koi to warmer water 🐠

Your koi are accustomed to water temperatures that fluctuate according to the season. In spring, you should ensure that the water temperature does not change too quickly. Koi are sensitive to sudden temperature fluctuations. Let them gradually get used to warmer water by slowly turning up the pond heater if you have one. After winter dormancy, your koi's immune system is often still weakened. Therefore, it is important to observe your fish closely. Do they move normally? Do they rub against stones or seem sluggish? Are there any small injuries or white spots? If so, you should not hesitate. Mild care products and water additives support your fish's defenses in a natural way.

Increase feeding slowly 🍽️

Last but not least: feeding. In winter, koi eat less, and now that water temperatures are rising, it is important to increase feeding slowly. Start with smaller portions and increase them gradually as the fish's metabolism reactivates. Make sure to use high-quality koi food that is easily digestible and supports the health of the fish.

Conclusion: Fresh into spring! 🌷🌞

With these simple steps, your pond will be fit for spring again in no time. A clear pond, healthy plants, and happy koi—the new season can arrive! Remember, spring cleaning is not only important for the pond, but also for the well-being of your koi. I hope my tips help you get your koi pond in top shape. 💪

Have fun getting your pond ready and may your koi thrive! 🐠❤️
