🔍🐠 Why is a spring health check so important?🦠:🚑
After winter dormancy, your fish are weakened. Many pathogens that survived the winter are now multiplying very quickly. By performing regular health checks, you can identify problems early and take effective action against them.
How to start the season with your Koi in good health using a simple check-up 🐟
Spring is an exciting time for us Koi enthusiasts: nature is waking up and our Koi are becoming more active. However, this is precisely when they are most susceptible to diseases. Why? Because their immune system is not yet fully up to speed after the winter. At the same time, parasites, fungi, and bacteria start to increase again in the warming water.
Observe behavior: What is normal and what is not?🤔💭
A healthy Koi swims calmly and steadily through the water, shows interest in its surroundings, and comes to the edge when you appear. Abnormal behavior can be an early sign of parasites or infections:
- Frequent rubbing against pond walls or stones → indication of parasites
- Lethargy, clamped fins, frantic swimming → possible signs of skin or gill problems
- Apathetic lingering in a corner → possibly the first symptoms of a bacterial infection
If you suspect parasites such as skin or gill flukes, an anti-parasitic treatment is recommended.
Examine skin, mucous membranes, and eyes closely 🐟
Your Koi's skin should shine, free of discoloration, redness, or deposits. The mucous membrane protects them from pathogens; if it is milky, irregular, or excessively thick, this may indicate an infection.
Eyes and fins also reveal a lot: cloudiness or sunken eyes, clamped or frayed fins can be early warning signs of illness. Do you see white spots? A treatment against white spot disease can help, e.g., Colombo FMC-50. Cotton-like patches on the skin or fins also indicate a fungal infection. A targeted anti-fungal treatment will help here. There are also specific anti-parasitic treatments for pathogens like Trichodina or Ichthyobodo. For external damage such as ulcers or fin rot, an antibacterial preparation for external use is the right choice.
Feeding behavior 🐟🐠
Koi begin to feed again as temperatures rise. However, if individual fish refuse to eat or spit out food, caution is advised. Possible causes: digestive problems, parasites, or bacterial infections.
- For symptoms like dropsy or mouth rot, an antibacterial medication for internal use is recommended.
- For feeding in the spring, easily digestible special food is recommended.
Gills and respiration 😮💨🫁
Gills reveal a lot about the condition of your fish. Healthy gills are evenly red and free of mucus. If they are pale, irregular, or heavily coated in mucus, an infection may be present.
- Here too, anti-parasitic or medications can help, depending on whether parasites or bacteria are the cause.

Check water quality 💦🌊🐸
Many diseases are caused by poor water parameters. Check the temperature, pH level, nitrite, ammonium, and oxygen content regularly.
- With a digital water tester, you always have your water quality under control.
- In case of bacterial problems, nutritional support with vitamins is also helpful.
External parasites 🐜🪳
If your Koi are rubbing themselves violently or you notice small, moving dots on their skin, it may be external parasites like fish lice. In such cases, a specific fish medication against external parasites will help.
Conclusion: Healthy into spring – with your health check 🩺♥️🫶
A regular look at the behavior, skin, fins, gills, and feeding habits of your Koi helps you to detect diseases early. This allows you to react quickly with the right products and care measures – before anything serious develops.
