Richtig füttern im Jahresverlauf – Energie, die zur Jahreszeit passt 🐟

Feeding correctly throughout the year – energy that suits the season 🐟

Feed is more than just a meal – it is a management tool. The right type at the right time supports digestion, growth, and the immune system. The wrong type burdens both the koi and the water quality. The reason lies in the biology of the koi: they are cold-blooded, and their metabolism follows the water temperature directly. That is why it is worth thinking about feeding throughout the entire year. 🌱🐠

In this post, you will learn:

  • Why water temperature determines the feed 🌡️
  • Which feed fits which phase 🗓️
  • Why the digestion of koi requires special consideration 🐟
  • How you can protect digestion and water quality 🤍

🌡️ Temperature sets the pace

The koi metabolism depends directly on the water temperature – not on the calendar. As a rough guide:

  • Below approx. 8–10 °C → little to no feeding; the metabolism is largely dormant
  • Approx. 8–15 °C (spring/autumn) → easily digestible transitional/spring feed, often containing wheat germ, which is well digested even at cooler temperatures
  • Approx. 15–20 °C → balanced year-round feed
  • Above approx. 18–20 °C (summer) → growth or summer feed, which is richer in energy and protein

➡️ If "heavy," protein-rich feed is given too early, digestion can be overwhelmed – causing stress for the fish and the water.

🐟 Why digestion requires special consideration

Koi have no true stomach – food passes through the gut relatively quickly. This has two consequences:

  • They cannot process large amounts at once.
  • At temperatures that are too low, undigested food remains in the gut and can cause problems.

➡️ Therefore, the rule is: better several small portions than one large one – and always appropriate for the temperature.

🗓️ Gradual rather than sudden

  • Increase feed amount slowly, not from zero to a hundred
  • Only feed as much as is completely consumed in a few minutes
  • In the event of a sudden temperature drop, reduce the amount again

➡️ Residues pollute the water, drive up ammonium and nitrate levels, and promote algae.

⚠️ Watch for these signals

  • Food is taken in and spat back out → temperature too low or the type of feed is not suitable
  • Cloudy water after feeding → amount too high
  • Decreasing appetite → check water values and temperature

✅ Conclusion: Anyone who chooses feed appropriate to the season, takes the specific digestion of koi into account, and increases amounts carefully will keep their fish healthy and the water clear. 🍤🐟
