About us

What looks like Europe’s largest koi hall from the outside is, at its core, a family business. Tobias and Andreas von Komorowski built Koi-Area — and they still answer the phones themselves.

We started with less water than is in a single tank today

What we lacked back then wasn't the product range. It was someone to honestly say what three fish really need — and what they don't. So, we became that someone.

Today, there are several hundred koi in our tanks in Mönchengladbach, plus around a thousand items for pond and equipment. The scale has changed, not our mindset.

Our journey begins in Japan

We select every fish personally on-site. What counts isn't the first impression, but the potential: body shape, pattern, color development — and the question of how a koi will develop over the coming years. No middlemen, no bulk orders from an exporter.

You can verify everything

This is the difference compared to a pure online shop: You can visit us. The hall is open to the public, the fish are in the water, the food is in the bowl. If something isn't to your liking, you see it before you buy, not after.

We also say no

If a koi doesn't fit your existing stock, your filter is too small, or the time of year is wrong, we tell you. A fish that doesn't thrive with you is not a good deal for anyone.

Who you will meet

  • Tobias and Andreas von Komorowski — Founders. They travel to Japan, select the fish, and provide consultations over the phone.
  • Lisa — Consulting and community. The first point of contact for everything that comes in via email or social media.
  • The team in the hall — Husbandry, water quality, shipping.
